Sanctuary Sanctimony
Eric Adams has finally learned that karma has a wicked sense of humor.
The man who once proudly declared New York City a “sanctuary city” now finds himself the target of political persecution by New York Governor Kathy Hochul. And why? Because he dared to speak the truth about illegal immigration wreaking havoc on the Big Apple… and pledging to work with President Donald Trump to address it.
This saga, which has all the makings of an Aaron Sorkin political thriller, highlights the sheer hypocrisy and vindictiveness of those in power. When Adams was singing from the progressive hymn sheet, he was the golden boy. Now that he’s acknowledged reality and sought practical solutions, he’s facing the political guillotine.
NYC: Sanctuary City?
Let’s rewind to 2023, when I wrote about Adams’ sudden realization that declaring NYC a sanctuary city might not have been the brightest idea. Back then, Adams lamented the 10,000 migrants flooding into the city each month, warning that the issue would “destroy New York City.” His epiphany came too late, of course, after virtue-signaling his way into a corner.
Adams had initially boasted about NYC’s sanctuary status, claiming the city had always managed those seeking the American Dream. A year later, Adams found himself overwhelmed, admitting, “Never in my life have I had a problem that I did not see an ending to. I don’t see an ending to this.”
Revolutionaries rarely make the jump to administrators.
This was a far cry from the confident mayor who dismissed concerns that sanctuary policies would attract more migrants. Skyrocketing immigration numbers and a $12 billion deficit forced Adams to face the truth.
Enter The Donald
The 2024 election changed everything. With The Donald back in the White House, Adams saw his lifeline. He pledged to work with the new administration on efforts to round up and deport illegal immigrants. Democrats didn’t take that too well.
The Biden DOJ, clearly miffed by Adams’ pivot to control migration into the city, had already indicted him on five questionable corruption charges. However, Trump’s DOJ moved to dismiss the case, signaling a new era of cooperation between City Hall and the federal government.
Governor Hochul considered Adams’ alliance with Trump a bridge too far. She said she had “serious questions” about the future of Adams’ administration. Calls for his resignation grew louder, especially after several top deputies resigned and City Council Speaker Adrienne Adams (no relation) joined the chorus.
All Adams had done was express his wish to work with Trump’s Border Czar and new American folk hero, Tom Homan.
Hochul’s Hypocrisy
Hochul’s outrage isn’t about governance. It’s about progressive politics. Adams’ willingness to work with Trump is seen as the ultimate betrayal, even though The Donald is a local boy. The New York Democratic establishment simply doesn’t tolerate dissent.
Hochul’s attempt to oust Adams is a political hit job… in broad daylight.
It’s ironic, isn’t it? Adams, who once toed the progressive line, is now being crucified for acknowledging the very problems conservatives have warned about for years. Hochul, who backed Adams on sanctuary policies, now finds his honesty “troubling and serious.”
The Governor’s meeting with city leaders to discuss a “path forward” is a thinly veiled attempt to force Adams out. She’s waiting for a federal court hearing to decide whether to proceed, but the writing’s on the wall. Hochul wants Adams gone.
Sanctuary Policies: A Disaster Foretold
As I wrote back in 2023, the problem isn’t Mexicans or any specific nationality. Biden’s open-border policies attract masses of people with no vetting process. Adams’ lament about receiving migrants from Venezuela, Ecuador, Russia, and West Africa underscores the scope of the crisis.
When you open your borders indiscriminately, you invite chaos. Adams realized this too late, but at least he realized it. Hochul and her ilk live in a fantasy world where virtue-signaling trumps reality.
The economic burden is staggering. A $12 billion deficit still threatens to cut essential services. Yet, the progressives refuse to acknowledge uncontrolled immigration as a major contributor. Adams, to his credit, sounded the alarm. And now he’s paying the price.
The Political Fallout
Adams’ meetings with city leaders, including Al Sharpton and other prominent figures, suggest he’s not going down without a fight. But the pressure is mounting. US House Minority Leader Hakeem Jeffries is set to discuss the situation with Hochul, adding another layer of intrigue.
The narrative being pushed is that Adams is now beholden to Trump. However, Adams is only beholden to reality. The sanctuary experiment has failed spectacularly, and Adams is merely trying to hold his ship together.
Wrap Up
Adams started as a good progressive, then had his “Come to Jesus” moment, changed policies, and now he finds himself persecuted for telling the truth. Hochul’s attempts to oust him show how the Dems play the game dirty.
Adams is willing to confront New York City's harsh realities. On the other hand, Hochul is more concerned with maintaining ideological purity than addressing the crisis.
Ultimately, the people of New York (and the federal taxpayers who provide the backstop) suffer. And as I sip my coffee here in Asti, I can’t help but think this is something the EU is hoping Italy goes through.
Stay tuned. This drama is far from over.
